New York, New York, 1899
The upper-class is thriving while the lower-class continue to shine their shoes and be grateful.
Carriages roll through central park, careful not to jostle its precious cargo. A young lady sits in the back seat, gazing lovingly from behind a fan at her beau who picked her up for a night on the town. Her head is clear, not a care in the world.
Yeah, right. ~ After her untimely death, a Ms. Elizabeth Holland has been uncrowned as social queen bee and good girl roll model for all the blossoming young ladies fresh from their debuts to society. The city is cloaked in black, mourning the death of it's fallen star. All except for two.
On way to her funeral, sixteen-year-old Diana Holland received a letter from her sister, written prior to her disappearance. Turns out, she just fled from her arranged marriage to her society equal and gender opposite the handsome Mr. Henry Schoonmaker to California to live with her lover, the former Holland family coach driver.
Her lifelong friend and number one enemy, Ms. Penelope Hayes blackmailed her out of the wedding with proof of Ms. Holland's affair with the servant. After a fling, Ms. Penelope has convinced herself that she is in undying love with Mr. Schoonmaker and that the feelings are mutual. Unbeknownst, Mr. Henry has had his eyes set on a different prize.
Ms. Diana and Mr. Henry met shortly after the latter's engagement to the former's elder sister. The connection was instant, and electricity was in the air. She was different from the other girls. She excited him. And he wasn't the average dull ego-case that she was so used to. They met in secret throughout the engagement, but withheld themselves from an all-out affair because of their mutual concerns for Ms. Elizabeth and plain common sense.
But now, as far as the world knows, Elizabeth is dead and Henry Schoonmaker is a bachelor once more. Heir to the wealthiest man in town, in can have any girl he so chooses. He's made his decision, but nobody knows that except for himself and his beloved D.
But this, my friends, is only ONE of the many social scandals, private or otherwise, shaking the great city of New York to its core. In this world, you can be whomever you choose. But choose wisely. Because once you've made up your mind, there's no going back.
